It's Three King's Day

A friend posted something about a Roscon cake on Facebook the other day. My initial thought was that it bore a strong resemblance to the Mardi Gras King Cake, so, sweet tooth in check, I decided to look into the subject a little more deeply.

January 6 is "Dia de Los Reyes", or Three King's Day, which commemorates the arrival of the three Magi. In much of the Spanish-language world, this is the day when children get presents (from the three Wise men, not Santa). Part of the celebration involves the Roscon de Reyes, or King's Ring. That's the cake, which often has a baby Jesus, or a small child's toy baked inside (that's strikingly similar to the Mardi Gras cake).

Color scheme aside, these two pastries do share similarities in presentation, even if their reasons for being are certainly different.

If you do a web search, you can find recipes for the Roscon de Reyes. May we suggest a Brut Cava, like the Juve y Camps Reserva de la Familia Brut 2008, as an accompaniment? A festive sparkling wine to enjoy with the celebration of Dia de Reyes.
