New Wines

Poggio Anima "Lilith" Primitivo
Italy's Primitivo is genetically akin to the American Zinfandel, and this wine is produced in the Basilicata IGT, which is in southeastern Italy.

According to Jewish folklore, Lilith was the first wife of Adam. She was banished from the Garden of Eden when she refused to make herself subservient to Adam’s sexual requests. When she was cast out of the Garden, she was made into a demon, and Adam was given a second wife, Eve, who was fashioned from his rib to ensure her obedience to her man. Where Adam was created from dust, Lilith was created from filth and sediment. Primitivo refuses to be submissive to the oenology that it is the same grape as its close relative Zinfandel. Many subscribe to this idea, though they are both mutations of Crljenak, a Croatian varietal. Primitivo always brings plenty of flesh and ripeness to the table with a solid spine of certainty and structure.

The vineyard is located in Nova Siri, in the province of Matera. Here, the warm southern Italian sun rises on the Ionian coast of Basilicata. The fermentation is carried out with natural native yeasts present in the vineyard, the crushed grapes undergo a cold soak for a few days and the cap is managed by punching down. After the primary fermentation, the wine undergoes an extended maceration of 3 weeks, after which it is racked into stainless steel tanks where the malolactic fermentation occurs, followed by aging for 8 months.

A dark, juicy, fruit-forward red, delivering layers of jammy plum and wild berry notes propped against medium tannins and a tangy, herb-tinged finish. Only $11.99 in the Bottle Club®.

Saladini Pilastri Rosso Piceno
We already carry the white from Saladini Pilastri (editors note: I just had a bottle of the white with dinner this week. Clean, crisp and refreshing. Time for another), which scored 90 points from Tanzer. The Rosso Piceno also scored 90 from Tanzer, illustrating the winery's commitment to quality.

The characteristics of this wine are its typical deep ruby color, vinous bouquet and dry harmonic taste. It is produced from only the best Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, and mellowed in oak barrels. It is a wine which is at its best served at room temperature, to accompany all kinds of roast meat and game.

We have the 1.5L bottles in stock at only $12.96 in the Bottle Club®.

Ripped from the Headlines

A while back, we noted that Eataly New York was having issues with the agency governing liquor sales. They closed the liquor store at their NY location, and are opening a Nutella bar. Read about it here

About a year or so ago, Maker's Mark announced, then reversed, a decision to dilute their bourbon due to increased demand. Now, Buffalo Trace is warning of a shortage due to demand. The news story is here.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone, and happy Mother's Day!
